Review of One Piece

Lets be real for a second One Piece is a mess and also a masterpiece at the same time and thats exactly why I love it

The real strength is the world building

Forget the fights forget the power levels Oda built a world that feels alive islands have their own culture history and problems characters from five hundred chapters ago randomly show up and matter again the sky islands the underwater fishman island the giant cake island everything connects in a way that makes you believe this world actually exists outside of the main crew

The biggest weakness is the pacing

I have to say it the anime especially is painfully slow sometimes a fight that should take two episodes stretches into six months of real life time and dont get me started on the reaction shots every character needs to react to everything five times before the next move the manga is better but even there some arcs like Dressrosa and Wano take forever to finish you almost forget how they started by the time they end

The main character Luffy is smarter than he looks

People call Luffy dumb but here is the thing he understands people better than anyone he knows exactly who needs a punch and who needs a hug he doesnt care about justice or morality he cares about his friends and that simplicity makes him unstoppable when he punched a celestial dragon it wasnt a smart political move it was pure instinct and thats why it worked

Female characters could be written better

This is my honest problem most female characters in One Piece start strong like Robin and Nami but later their role becomes just crying or waiting for Luffy to save them Big Mom was terrifying at first but by the end of her own arc she turned into a joke Robin has not had a real one on one fight in over a thousand chapters Oda can do better and I hope he does

The fake out deaths are annoying

Someone dies and you cry and then five chapters later they are alive with a bandage Pell survived a nuke Pagaya survived a lightning bolt from god Pound survived being cut down and at this point when a real death happens like Ace or Whitebeard you almost dont believe it at first because Oda tricked you so many times it takes away the weight of real loss

Why I still love it

Despite all the problems One Piece makes you care after a thousand episodes you know these characters like your own friends you laugh with them you cry with them you celebrate when they win and you feel empty when the anime takes a break the journey is long sometimes too long but the destination is not even the point the point is the road
